Building With Stone, Learning With Time: A Journey Of Craftsmanship And Authenticity

“You are enough”

While I work, I have a lot of time to think, listen to books, and educate myself with anything that helps me grow as an individual. I now share a lot of things with my grandson that I wish I knew as a kid. So while  was building this new chimney my thoughts were on this…

I was born here as a Portuguese American. I went right into first grade only speaking Portuguese. I spent all of my early years trying to fit in, be like everyone else, not be Portuguese in any way. There was always someone that didn’t say kind things or wanted to fight me in elementary mostly just because of who I was.

I spent most of my life not being authentic to who I was. In turn you attract or hang out with people that don’t align with who you are! Be yourself, the right people will come into your life!

So be your authentic self. Be you! You are enough people. All of you. Let’s be kind to others. Everyone is fighting a battle you have no idea about!

Brian DeMedeiros was proudly featured in the 2008-2009 annual edition of Southern New England Home magazine for his exceptional stone craftsmanship on a North Dartmouth home. Homeowner Ilya Broughton chose BD Stone Craftsman for their renowned attention to detail and meticulous artistry, creating a stunning result that stands as a testament to their reputation for excellence.

A Massachusetts refuge for fun, family, and friends

The proposed project for stonework artist Brian DeMedeiros was to enhance and beautify a comfortable, elegant, spacious area around the swimming pool so that it could become the focal point on the property – a place for social events, relaxation, and just plain fun. The challenge for Demedeiros was to create what his client had in mind. “Ilya had such a clear idea and I was trying to bring that to life for her.” Not so easy. Happily the client, an astute designer who had drawn up the plans for the pavilion-style covered area herself, was able to convey her dream to DeMedeiros, and they were off and running to a harmonious partnership.

Ilya Broughton chose DeMedeiros because of his reputation for careful selection of stone and artistry in its placement. “I wanted a rustic, natural look,” says Broughton, “and the pool was already built with a chiseled, unfitted edge so it was important to carry that look through.” And during the season the pool is filled with water the color of the Atlantic Ocean – all carefully orchestrated by Broughton to fulfill her very specific look and feel.

When DeMedeiros first arrived at this lovely Dartmouth home, he found the pavilion, the swimming pool, sand, and gravel. But that was fine by him. As an artist he relished the prospect of creating on a blank canvas within an existing framework. Always working solo he creates the handcrafted stonework himself, maintaining that there is an inherent difficulty in sharing an artistic vision. He sets all the stone himself. “I know the way I want it to look, and it’s almost impossible to explain that to someone else.”

“Brian was so easy to work with,” notes Broughton. “He took me on tours to see different types of stone walls and mortar application – I had np idea there could be so many variations… Then he does wonderful renderings so I knew what to expect.”

Broughton’s natural-look design reflects the architecture of the home and pulls the property together. Sizing and dimension were very important to the cohesiveness of the design. “If the long walls weren’t perfectly sized it could very easily look too small for the scale of the back yard,” she comments. “Brian has an excellent sense of dimension and it worked out beautifully.”

In all his work DeMedeiros likes to use stone that is naturally cut to eliminate the machined look and here he chose two types of New England fieldstone. Around the pool itself he placed Natural Cleft bluestone for just the right texture and color, drawing the color of the pool water through the design. He then extend the bluestone down the steps from the pool to the lawn.

The pièce de résistance is the fireplace. Used for warmth and aesthetics rather than cooking, this stunning Rumford-style fireplace is “tall and shallow for maximum heat distribution.” DeMedeiros created what amounts to a very large piece of sculpture for dram and impact. As a functioning piece of sculpture, it was that much harder to build. The fireplace had to work, had to look good, and has to endure. The placement of the carefully chosen stones was meticulous and adds just the right touch of rough-hewn but sophisticated elegance to the “sculpture.”

The entire finished area sits comfortably on the land looking naturally as if it belongs. Features such as the granite bench beside the pool only add to the look – a spectacular piece of old curbing which DeMedeiros found and recycled. “They made these curb blocks by hand,” he says with much appreciation.

But perhaps the element of which DeMedeiros is the most fond is the smallest – the draining grate. It sits between the pool and the covered seating area. He found the artisans, iron Age Designs, in Seattle, Washington. They created a grate with an aged natural patina to be a design element that is also functional — something DeMedeiros particularly likes.

DeMedeiros learned everything he knows masterfully about stones through hands-on experience and from his father, who also built stone walls. “I still drive by walls we’ve built.” It’s not hard to see here DeMedeiros’s interest in stone came from, or why he is in such demand. Adds Broughton “…and he’s great to work with.”
